Weligama Beach

Weligama Beach curves around a broad bay and is one of the best-known surfing beaches on Sri Lanka’s south coast. The relatively gentle waves at the main beach make it popular with beginner surfers, while the wide stretch of sand is ideal for swimming and beach walks when conditions are suitable. Weligama town is close by, with restaurants, cafes, and local shops. Polhena Beach

Polhena Beach, close to Matara, is known for its reef-protected waters and coral formations. Madiha Beach

Just east of Polhena, Madiha has a more rugged coastline with sandy sections, rocky areas, and several surf breaks. It is particularly popular with experienced surfers, while the coastal road gives you easy access to small restaurants and cafes. Madiha is close enough to Matara to combine a beach day with a visit to the city, but its smaller scale gives it a different feel from the busier beaches around Mirissa. It is a good option if surfing and a relaxed coastal atmosphere are priorities.

Mirissa Beach

Mirissa is built around a curved sandy bay framed by coconut palms and rocky headlands. It is one of the south coast’s main departure points for whale-watching excursions, while the beach itself is popular for swimming, surfing, and relaxing by the Indian Ocean. Parrot Rock, at the eastern end of the bay, provides views across the beach and coastline. Dikwella town provides restaurants and local services, while its location makes it convenient for exploring the beaches between Matara and Tangalle. It is a practical choice for travelers who want to explore beyond the better-known south coast hubs.

Secret Beach Mirissa

Secret Beach is a small cove away from the main stretch of Mirissa Beach. Reaching it involves a short drive and walk, but the smaller setting makes it a useful stop when you want to spend some time away from the main beach. The cove has a mix of sand and rocky shoreline, with conditions varying according to the sea. It can easily be combined with a day around Mirissa, including lunch in town, a visit to the harbor, or a whale-watching trip.

Hiriketiya Beach

Hiriketiya is a small, horseshoe-shaped bay near Dikwella surrounded by tropical vegetation. Surfing is the main draw, with different breaks offering conditions for both beginners and more experienced surfers depending on the season. The compact beach is lined with cafes and restaurants, making it easy to combine time in the water with lunch or an afternoon by the bay. Hiriketiya has become more popular in recent years, but its relatively small scale still makes it feel very different from the larger beaches around Weligama.

Tangalle Beach

Tangalle marks a quieter and more expansive section of Sri Lanka’s south coast. Long beaches, rocky headlands, and stretches of undeveloped coastline give the area a distinctly different character from the busier bays further west. Tangalle is well suited to long beach walks and unhurried days by the ocean, while nearby attractions include Mulkirigala Rock Monastery. Talalla Beach

Talalla is one of the quieter beaches on Sri Lanka’s south coast, with a wide crescent of sand surrounded by coconut-covered hills. There is considerably less development than around Weligama or Mirissa, so the beach works particularly well for a slower coastal stay. Swimming and surfing are possible when conditions are suitable, and the area is also known for yoga retreats. When Is the Best Time to Visit Sri Lanka’s south coast?

The best time to visit Sri Lanka’s south coast is generally from November through April, when the southwest monsoon has eased and the southern coastline enters its main dry season. December through March is particularly popular for beach holidays, with generally favorable conditions for swimming, surfing, and coastal excursions.

Conditions can vary between beaches, however, and the sea can be rough even during the main season. Always check local conditions before swimming. Surf conditions also change throughout the year, so experienced surfers may choose specific beaches according to the conditions at the time of their visit.
