A Note From the Founder: Why the WorldIs Finally Discovering Sri Lanka
I have spent a career moving between industries and continents — real estate, aviation, investment, technology, travel, and hospitality, across the UK, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific. So when I tell you that what is
happening in Sri Lanka right now is different, I say it with the weight of that experience behind
me, not as a marketing line. Sri Lanka is having its moment. And it is a moment built on substance, not hype.
An Island Finally Being Seen for What It Is
This year alone, the accolades have arrived in a steady, unmistakable rhythm. Sri Lanka was
named the World’s Best Island Destination for 2026 by Big 7 Travel — ahead of Greece,
Portugal, Ireland, and Thailand. U.S. News & World Report placed it among Asia’s top five
destinations, alongside Tokyo, Seoul, and Palawan. It was named a Top 10 destination on G
Adventures’ Happiness List, and recognised as a leading wellness destination for the year.
None of these are minor trade publications. These are the authorities that shape where the
world’s most discerning travellers choose to go next.
As one industry analysis put it, Sri Lanka has transitioned from being a secondary stop on a
regional itinerary into a stand-alone destination in its own right — a nation that no longer needs
to borrow relevance from its neighbours.
I am not surprised. I have long believed that Sri Lanka holds something increasingly rare in
global travel: genuine compactness of experience. In a single, unhurried journey, a traveller can
move from ancient kingdoms and UNESCO World Heritage sites to mist-covered tea country,
from wildlife safaris rivalling East Africa to beaches that rival anywhere in the Indian Ocean, all
bound together by a warmth of hospitality that cannot be manufactured. Other destinations offer
pieces of this. Sri Lanka offers the whole.
What has changed is not the island. It is the world’s readiness to see it — aided by expanded
visa-free access, improving infrastructure, new luxury rail experiences, and a government and
tourism sector that are, for the first time in years, working in concert to welcome the world
properly.
What This Means for the Premium Traveller
Recognition brings a new kind of visitor — one with higher expectations and less patience for
compromise. The global premium traveller does not want to discover a destination that is merely
beautiful. They want a destination that is beautiful and effortless: seamless arrivals, considered
itineraries, private access where it matters, and a level of service that anticipates rather than
reacts.
This is precisely where I have built The Serendipity Experience.
We did not design TSE to be another operator riding the wave of Sri Lanka’s rediscovery. We
built it as the infrastructure that global luxury travel now demands of this island — drawing on
decades of experience in aviation, hospitality, and investment to construct journeys with the
same rigour I would bring to any boardroom decision. Every property we work with, every guide,
every private transfer, every quiet detail is chosen because it meets a standard, not because it
is convenient.
Luxury, to us, has never meant excess. It means honesty — sophistication without pretension,
exclusivity without theatre. A villa in the hill country should feel like a discovery, not a
transaction. A safari should feel like access, not a performance. That is the standard we hold
ourselves to, for every guest, from every corner of the world.
An Invitation
Sri Lanka’s rise is not a passing trend. It is the correction of an oversight — the world catching
up to what this island has always had to offer. As Founder and CEO of The Serendipity
Collection, and as someone who has spent his career building things that are meant to last, I
want to say plainly: we are ready.
Ready to welcome the world’s most discerning travellers. Ready to show them an island that
has earned its place among the very best. And ready to prove, journey after journey, that luxury
done honestly is the only luxury worth having.
I look forward to welcoming you to Sri Lanka.
Warm regards,

Consulting Group Vice President, European Chamber of Commerce of Sri Lanka
